The Best Designed Baby Changing Bags 2021

As parents as well as designers, we are always on the lookout for new, innovative products that solve everyday problems.

We have a fair amount of experience designing new products for the baby and nursery sector, including launching our own pushchair brand, Ark.

You don’t have to be a parent to know that one of the biggest issues faced by new parents is the amount of stuff a baby needs when they’re out and about. Bottles, nappies, change mats, burp cloths, rattles, a change of clothing or two, not to mention snacks for the toddler, all take up space in a well-stocked baby changing bag or nappy bag.  We decided to take a look at the features of the most innovative changing bags on the market and explore some of our favourites.

Well-designed changing bag with compartments. With sterilised bottles, snacks for toddlers, nappies and your own valuables all needing a space in the bag, compartments, zips and pockets need to be thought through to ensure no disasters occur.  There are so many innovative design solutions out there to try to solve this problem.

We love Pacapod as their pod designs really stand out and they were the first brand to think really innovatively around bag compartment design.

One-handed usage change bag. We all know that moment when you’re holding a baby and you only have one hand to get what you need from your changing bag! Clips, zips, fastenings and well-positioned openings are the key to great bag design.

We love Maxi-cosi bags, which are modern, with plenty of large compartments and pockets to hold every baby essential. There is even a toiletry bag for those emergency essentials, at easy reach for quick access. Not to mention it has a hanging hook to use in public changing rooms.

Wipeable or washable nappy bag fabrics. Spillages are practically guaranteed when it comes to having a baby, so the textiles choice is really important! There are so many fabrics to choose from….canvas, leather, cottons, polyesters and a variety of solutions for making them waterproof and wipeable. We love sourcing practical, sustainable fabrics when we’re designing anything for mums and babies, the softer the better.

We love Cam Cam Copenhagen as it’s quilted design is stylish and looks much more expensive than it really is! The changing bag has a water-repellent coating, inside and out, for extra protection for you baby essentials.

Looking good. Let’s face it, having a baby isn’t a very glamorous experience so the little things can make a big difference.  Having a beautifully designed diaper bag that looks great can be such a joy!

We love Tiba & Marl for their on-trend bags and practical designs.

Compact change bag design. Sometimes, on shorter trip, you don’t want a massive bag. Finding a small bag, that is still practical and designed to tick the other boxes too.

We love our very own Ark Grab & Go Bag for being so roomy but so compact, with great features like the one-handed wipe removal pocket.

With a big push towards reusable baby products and sustainable manufacturing, we suspect that ecologically sourced fabrics and solutions that work for reusable wipes and nappies will become more mainstream.

We’ve also noticed that being a new parent is often a time when lots of design issues become apparent and while caring for new little ones, mums and dads often come up with some great design solutions to the problems they’ve encountered.

Take a look at this inspirational story from the founder of Kerikit, Keri Jamieson. Kerikit have a stunning range of nappy bags that look like expensive handbags that you won’t want to swap once you no longer need a changing bag.
