You’re struggling to keep up, and you wish you had something to help you carry their leash and any other essentials you need on your walks. That’s where the genius idea for Mutt Clutch was born! Well they often say that necessity is the mother of invention! We teamed up with the founder of Mutt Clutch to create a revolutionary dog product that has taken the pet industry by storm.
The Outcome
The Mutt Clutch was an instant hit in the pet industry, with dog owners raving about its functionality and style. The product was featured in numerous pet blogs, and word quickly spread about this game-changing accessory. Katherine, the founder of Mutt Clutch, was thrilled with the response, and we were proud to have played a part in the success of such an innovative product that is now selling across the US.
The Story
Our journey with Mutt Clutch began when the founder (Katherine) approached us with an idea to create a practical and stylish accessory for dog owners based on her personal experience as a professional dog walker. The idea was simple – a clutch bag that can hold not only your dog’s leash but also your phone, keys, dog treats, hand warmers and other essentials. The challenge was creating a product that was functional, durable, but also stylish enough to appeal to dog owners here and over The Pond.
“Working as a dog walker and owning a dog walking business for many years, I became aware of difficulty in juggling leashes, my personal belongings, poop bags AND that yucky bag of dog poop all at the same time. There were bags on the market that helped with holding just some of these items, but none existed that offered to carry everything I needed. This is where my idea was born.” Katherine – Inventor of Mutt Clutch
Our team of fabric product developers (Anna and Helen!) quickly got to work, researching the latest trends in pet accessories and understanding the needs of dog owners. They also could pull from their own experience in this case. They looked at all the key items people take on dog walks and how best to store these in a convenient way. And then they spent time speaking with dog owners, dog walkers, and pet store owners to understand their needs, preferences and the nuances of selling this type of product. Armed with this knowledge, we began designing the Mutt Clutch.
The aim of the project was to create a stylish and practical accessory that is perfect for dog owners who want to keep their hands free while walking their pets. We got there in the end but there were a few bleeding fingers on the way from making the prototypes! The resulting produce is made of high-quality materials and has a unique design that allows you to carry everything you need in one convenient place.
The process of designing the Mutt Clutch was challenging, but we enjoyed every step of the way. We worked closely with Katherine to ensure that the final product met their vision and expectations as this is critical – the product is her baby after all! Our team of experts paid attention to every detail, from the quality of the materials to the design of the zip pull.

We used our expertise in the pet industry to create a product that was not only functional but also stylish and durable. We appreciated these were the key requirements based on the other products we had developed over the last decade of being immersed in pet product development for a range of different customers.
We developing 3 specific features as part of the development:
- Odour-absorbing charcoal packet – We developed an innovative odour-absorbing charcoal packet that fits neatly into the Mutt Clutch’s discreet poop pouch. Say goodbye to those unpleasant smells and hello to a fresh and clean walking experience.
- Easy to clean – The Mutt Clutch is a breeze to clean – just pop it into the washing machine, and it will come out looking sparkling fresh and new again. No more struggling with stains or unpleasant smells.
- Hands-free design – We know how important it is to have your hands free while walking your dog. That’s why we designed the Mutt Clutch with a leash hook that can be attached to the D-ring. Simply wrap the leash over your shoulder crossways, and you are now hands-free to play fetch or have fun with your furry friend. And if you prefer not to use a leash at all, you can hook the Mutt Clutch onto your belt loop using a carabiner attached to the D-ring, allowing you to keep all your dog walking essentials in one place.
We used high-quality materials and paid attention to every detail – often in textile-based products sourcing the right fabric is the most time-consuming part. The Mutt Clutch is made of a durable and waterproof material that is perfect for use in any weather conditions. The Mutt Clutch comes in a variety of colours, so you can choose the one that best fits your style.
As we entered the prototype phase, we conducted multiple tests to ensure that the Mutt Clutch was durable and could withstand the daily wear and tear of a dog owner’s life. We experimented with different materials to find the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics, and we even enlisted the help of our own furry friends to test the product out. Archie., Reggie and Dennis (the office dogs) loved this product as they got to go on lots of walks to test it!
