The GOBAG is the ultimate carry-on backpack designed for modern adventurers who would chose functionality first and form second. That’s not to say it isn’t a great looking bag – it’s just that the design ethos is practicality and function first. It was created by a team of outdoor enthusiasts who needed a bag that could facilitate their extreme adventures ad weekend trips. They turned to D2M for our expertise in backpack development, and together we created a product that exceeded the expectations of their crowdfunding backers and customers.
The Outcome
The GOBAG was launched on Kickstarter and was met with awesome support from almost 2,500 backers from all over the world! Our client was thrilled as you can imagine! The campaign reached a whopping 663% of its funding goal, proving that the demand for backpacks that are designed with specific functionality that the target market craves.
The Story
The team behind the GOBAG is based in the Scottish Highlands, where they draw inspiration from the natural beauty of their surroundings. The rugged landscapes and hidden gems of Scotland have been a source of inspiration for the team, fuelling their passion for travel and adventure.
In 2013, the team was searching for a backpack that they could take as carry-on luggage on cheap flights throughout Europe. They couldn’t find a suitable bag that was both compact and versatile, so they decided to design their own solution. Two years of sketches, sewing, testing, and refining followed until the GOBAG was finally launched on Kickstarter.
D2M was brought on board, roughly half way through this timeline, to help the team bring their vision to life, working closely with them to develop a design that would meet the needs of modern travellers and adventurers. Our team’s expertise in backpack development was critical to producing the final prototypes that refined its functionality and improved its design for cost effective volume production.
The final design of the GOBAG is a sleek, lightweight, and durable backpack that can transform into a duffel bag or a shoulder bag depending on the user’s needs and what activities they are engaging in. The backpack is made from high-quality materials that are both water-resistant and durable, ensuring that it can keep up with even the most rugged adventures and that it can withstand the inevitable knocks and bashes when travelling!

The backpack also features a built-in vacuum compression system that allows users to compress their belongings by up to 50%, maximising storage space. Testing on actual adventures and with all the necessary outdoor activities kit, was a critical part of the success of this product.
The GOBAG also has a detachable daypack that can be used as a standalone bag or attached to the main backpack for additional storage. The daypack has a built-in laptop sleeve and multiple compartments for storage, making it perfect for work or play.
In addition, the GOBAG has a patented and integrated vacuum compression system, which enables users to compress their belongings by up to 50%, maximising storage space. It was important to protect some I.P. on this project to help dissuade existing brand copying all of James’s good ideas! The bag also features a patented and integrated air valve, allowing users to inflate or deflate the back panel to suit their comfort level. D2M’s team worked with James and the team on the right valve, material selection and compartment sizes.
