Veglo
Wearable cycling light developed for urban commuters and licensed to Oxford Products for global distribution.
Veglo came to D2M with a brief to develop a wearable lighting system that would make cyclists visible from multiple angles in urban conditions. The result was the Commuter X4, a fibre optic light system designed to be worn over a backpack and used daily on the road.
The Story
The design challenge combined textiles, electronics and industrial design. D2M tested reflective fabrics, materials and fibre optic light guides to establish what would deliver reliable brightness in a slimline, wearable form. Electronics work ran alongside, testing LED luminosity and internal components to ensure consistent performance.
Prototypes were developed iteratively, with CAD and rapid prototyping used to resolve the waterproof casing and the overall form. The final product uses four fibre optic light guides and a central projective light, fits backpacks up to 35 litres via adjustable straps, and is USB rechargeable with multiple flash and fade settings.

The Outcome
The Commuter X4 launched via Kickstarter, raising over £19,000 and validating demand from the cycling community. Oxford Products, one of the UK's leading cycling and motorcycle accessories distributors, recognised the product's potential and licensed it for global distribution across more than 80 countries.
