Tofuture makes kitchen gadgets for vegans and vegetarians. Its founders came to D2M with a concept for a tofu press, frustrated that existing options on the market were bulky, awkward to use or built from unsustainable materials. D2M developed the product from concept through to a manufactured, market-ready design.
The Story
The brief was straightforward in principle and harder to deliver well: a tofu press that worked quickly and cleanly, held up to regular use, and avoided the unsustainable materials common in existing products. D2M began with research into tofu pressing methods and the shortcomings of products already on the market, then worked through concept sketches and 3D models with the founders before settling on a direction.
Prototyping followed, with the design tested for function, durability and ease of use across a range of testers, from experienced tofu makers to first-time users. Feedback from that testing fed back into refinements before the design was finalised. The final product uses a hinge mechanism that allows tofu to be pressed quickly with minimal effort. D2M also developed the retail packaging alongside the product.
The founders later appeared on Dragons' Den. They did not secure investment, and went on to market and sell the product independently.
The Outcome
The Tofuture Tofu Press has sold over 500,000 units, with more than 50,000 sold annually through Amazon.
