Cotton trousers with built-in socks for babies and toddlers.
Sockatoos are cotton trousers for babies and toddlers up to four years old, with socks built into the leg so they cannot be kicked off or lost. The idea came from a new mother tackling a problem familiar to most parents, socks that never stay on. D2M developed the product from concept through to a manufactured, certified range.
The Story
The brief started with a simple frustration: babies and toddlers kick their socks off constantly, and keeping a pair matched and in place through a day of wear is close to impossible. The solution was to remove the sock as a separate item altogether and build it into the trousers.
D2M's fabric product development team worked through concept exploration and multiple prototypes to get the fit, comfort and durability right for everyday use. Sourcing the right manufacturer was central to the brief, since the product needed a partner experienced in baby garments, able to meet the safety and certification standards required for children's clothing, and willing to produce small initial batch sizes. The range was tested through an internationally recognised test house to confirm it met the required safety standards.
The Outcome
Sockatoos is stocked by John Lewis & Partners and leading UK nursery retailers, and the range has expanded since launch.
