The Grip Taper is a handheld, battery-operated tape and wrap dispenser designed for industrial packaging environments. All Pack Packaging came to D2M wanting to move beyond consumables and establish a proprietary product that would differentiate their offering and create a platform for exclusive compatible supplies. D2M took the project from research through to production.
The Story
D2M's senior designers spent time on All Pack's customers' packaging lines before the design process began. Watching operators work with existing equipment identified where the problems were and what the product needed to solve. That research shaped the concept from the start.
Early physical models were built to test the technical fundamentals before any detailed design work was committed to. The engineering requirements were specific: the device had to work in any orientation, could not leak, and had to hold up under the conditions of daily industrial use. A UK electronics developer worked alongside D2M on the user interface, keeping the controls straightforward for operators in a working environment.
Prototypes were tested by operators and the feedback fed into successive refinements. The finished product is compact, battery-powered, and supports multiple tape length and speed settings. It was manufactured in South Wales.
The Outcome
The Grip Taper is now used in over 12 countries through 22 distributors. For All Pack's clients, it delivers a 39% reduction in plastic waste, a 10% reduction in costs and a 40% faster wrapping process. It also established All Pack as the exclusive supplier of compatible consumables, which was the original commercial objective.
