What is Technical Feasibility?
The technical feasibility stage fully explores the idea and attempts to ensure that technically it will work. This might involve researching mechanisms, electronic solutions or the latest technical fabrics and assessing their capabilities to perform the required function in your product. . This stage sometimes needs to be combined with making a basic physical model and it can sometimes be sensible to build novel mechanisms in 2D to assess feasibility whilst minimising your cost and therefore risk.
By way of an example, it might be that a new concept for a camping kettle is required to run off batteries and boil water in under a minute for 6 people to have a cup of tea. The technical feasibility assessment would look at the latest heating technology, efficiencies and the latest (affordable) battery technology. Potentially this might be possible, but it might be that the necessary power to do this requires a battery that is the size and weight of a brick. This might then not be feasibility for a camping product. The stage would seek to provide the necessary information for the client to decide if it is worth proceeding.
What might happen during this stage?
- Understanding and detailing the key project requirements.
- Determining the approach to prove the technical feasibility.
- Building 2D mechanisms to prove concept.
- Researching potential technologies.
- Basic calculations around efficiency.
- Size and Weight calculations
- Overall review of technical feasibility given the results of the points above.
This is a complete list of all potential requirements of this stage. It does depend on your project and your specific requirements and therefore all of these elements might not be necessary in your case.

How much and how long?
Generally this stage should take two to four weeks to be done thoroughly. Cost depends on complexity but varies from around £1500 to £3000.
