All idea development is inherently risky and at D2M we use our extensive experience to develop a bespoke idea development plan for your project that seeks to minimise the risk whilst analysing the project from a commercial perspective. We do this by considering the target market, potential marketing claims and production costs from a very early stage in the project. This hugely increases your chances of success with your project.
We offer specific stages of work within your overall project plan that clarify the best route forward and highlight areas of concern in: market positioning; messaging; route to market; regulations and compliance; production costs and sourcing. We use the results of these stages to inform decision making. This is always communicated in an honest and transparent way with our clients so you are in control of your project’s direction and fully informed as to the level of risk you’re taking. This includes advising if we believe that stopping the project is necessary as it is likely to not be viable for any reason.
Every project is unique and the costs for developing a product can vary hugely. One of the first things to consider is what funding is available. We always work with a client to ensure that the funds they have are used to maximise their chances of success. This often means ensuring that key elements of development are carried out that will enable you to access further funding through investors, crowdfunding or grants. Our team of experienced designers are trained to develop products that keep manufacturing costs to a minimum where possible.
Through our external marketing consultant, we offer early stages of marketing exploration. These stages focus on establishing product positioning, target consumer, core messaging, route to market and overall objective. We help our client to position their idea within their identified market, analyse existing solutions and better understand the user and their needs.
This early stage provides a sense check on the project - will it work? Our professional design team will research, design and demonstrate if your great idea is technically possible. If applicable, we will also get feedback from partners and manufacturers, highlight any issues and make recommendations for how to proceed with the project.
After the initial design stages we often speak to one of our trusted and long-standing patent attorney partners to get a free opinion on the best approach to the IP of the product. We will discuss with them and ask them to advise if they think the concept is patentable or if a registered design route is a better approach moving forward. Our aim is always to ensure that we add IP where we can to the design of a product and that it can be protected at the right stage of the development process
This stage provides a sense check on the project. We will obtain an estimated set up and unit cost for production and make recommendations for how to proceed with the project. Having this feedback early in the project informs the design process and results in a more viable product
For products where safety regulations and compliance are key, we use an international test-house to produce a safety review. This allows us to see any potential safety issues with the product and the standards the product must comply to, informing the design process moving forward
Over the past decade, D2M has built an extensive network of trusted suppliers and agents in the Far East and the UK. We make every effort to source the appropriate components, materials and manufacturing partners for your product. Unfortunately, due to nature of the work, we cannot guarantee to find exactly the ideal solution for your product at a price that is commercially viable but we will make every effort to do so.
