Overview

One of the biggest and fastest growing markets in the past recent years has  been the makeup and beauty industry.

With social media mediums such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and snapchat increasing marketing and spreading popular new products in makeup & hair-care, it is not surprise that there have been large successes in the beauty market. Often the simplest designs have reached large and sometimes international success.

You don’t have to look any further than the teardrop shaped blender sponge to see a clear example of this!

The key in breaking through in the beauty industry is not only creating something helpful for consumers, but also innovative and fresh – as well as aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes, just a simple redesign to a traditional favourite can also reach major success in this industry.

Marketing, brand and packaging are the key ingredients for success here. Good product design can only take you so far in the beauty industry!

What type of beauty products sell well?

A common problem found with all makeup users is that you eventually end up with piles of different beauty products. What about when you’re travelling? Packing your products can become a nightmare, and finding the right travel storage solution that can fit all the different sizes of your products can almost seem impossible.

We’ve worked with various client on solutions for this very problem and can work with you if you have an idea to make it more convenient to organise your beauty items at home or to travel with them.

Clean Up!

One of the best ways to create a useful and successful product is by observing what is most needed by your target market. In the terms of the beauty community, a real issue was the amount of time spent cleaning the thousands of makeup brushes that most beauty consumers had.

We’ve worked with a company client to develop a product for cleaning beauty products that is soon to launch onto the market. Watch this space!

Hair Straightening Innovation

If you struggle with ideas on how to create a completely new product, sometimes the best way to create a product is to improve what you already have.

Take a leaf out of Dyson’s book and try to look at a problem with a fresh set of eyes. What technologies from other areas could be applied into the beauty product sector? Recently we worked on a product for foot care that provided a genuine solution to a real need by taking technology for automobile repair and applying to a beauty product. Launch is imminent!

Designing Beauty Products FAQs

What is beauty product design?

Beauty product design is the process of developing new tools, devices, or accessories for the health and beauty market. It includes concept creation, styling, prototyping, and ensuring the product is functional, safe, and desirable for consumers.

A wide range of products can be designed, from skincare and makeup tools to personal grooming devices and wellness electronics. This includes both manual and powered products.

Timelines vary depending on complexity, but most beauty products take between 4 to 12 months to develop through concept, prototyping, testing, and refinement before they’re ready for production.

Yes. Prototyping is essential for testing usability, functionality, and appearance. It allows for real-world feedback and reduces the risk of costly mistakes during manufacturing.

A successful beauty product combines great functionality with desirable aesthetics, solves a real user problem, and is manufacturable at a viable cost. Testing and user feedback during development are key to achieving this.
