BarkPack – Pet Product Design and Development from Concept to Production
BarkPack is an innovative hybrid dog travel bed and backpack designed to make adventures with your dog easier, cleaner, and more comfortable. Created by Bark Products, it was developed with D2M Product Design’s full pet product design and development expertise, taking the idea from early concept sketches through to a fully manufactured, market‑ready product.
The Outcome
BarkPack successfully launched via the brand’s own website and has been met with strong early interest from dog owners looking for high‑quality, multifunctional travel gear. The product demonstrates how well‑executed pet product design and development can take a concept born from personal experience and turn it into a commercially viable, production‑ready solution.
The Story
BarkPack’s founders, inspired during a rainy Lake District trip with their Dachshund, wanted to solve a problem familiar to many dog owners: finding a portable, waterproof, comfortable place for a dog to rest in public spaces, in the car, or on outdoor adventures. The vision was for a backpack that unfolded into a cosy dog bed while also offering storage for essentials – a solution combining convenience for owners with comfort for dogs.
D2M joined the project right from the beginning. Our senior textile designer, Hellen Rayner, brought over 10 years’ experience in developing technical fabric products to lead the product design process. We worked closely with the client to refine the styling, develop the technical features, select durable waterproof materials, and ensure the bed met both the functional and aesthetic expectations of the brand.

Details
BarkPack features a plush, fold‑out dog bed inside a lightweight backpack shell, providing protection from cold, wet, or uncomfortable surfaces. It includes a removable messenger bag, integrated dog seatbelt attachment, reflective safety detailing, water‑repellent fabrics, and multiple storage pockets. The product was designed to be equally useful at home, in public places, or while travelling – offering a truly versatile pet travel solution.
From a manufacturing perspective, D2M produced full technical specifications and tech packs, sourced the right materials, and engaged with manufacturing partners to obtain accurate costings. We supported the client through the first production run, ensuring quality and functionality were maintained.
