How to Register a patent – Guide to patent registration for new ideas

All UK patents have to be registered with the UK Intellectual Property Office (formerly known as the Patent Office.) as they maintain the only UK Patent Register. To register your patent you need a detailed patent draft and to complete the draft you will need:

  • Clear design that shows how the idea will wotk
  • Drafted patent claims describing the uniqueness of the concept
  • Detailed patent drawings
Once the above points have been covered a patent can be registered by post or online at the UK IPO. D2M Innovation can help in the following ways:

  • Developing the idea and determining how it will work
  • Drafting suitable patent drawings
  • Detailing the wording of the patent application including claims
It may be sensible to prototype the idea before registering a patent (for further information read this article: Patent or Prototype First? ). D2M can develop a prototype of your idea from a textile based product to a mechanical device or a plastic moulded product.

The Next Step in Patenting your Idea

If your idea needs developing before registering your patent, or you need help drafting your patent application, then request our Free Innovation Guide or book a meeting to discuss things further (we offer free initial telephone or in person consultations):
